Checkered Tea Set for 6, 22 Piece Blue Pottery

This checkered tea set is a 22 piece blue pottery set for six people, hand painted with a simple square pattern. It was made in Multan.

The design

Instead of florals, this set uses a bold checkered pattern of black and white squares on the teapot, plates, saucers and cups. It is a modern take on blue pottery, and the plain squares work well with minimalist tableware. The set includes a dinner plate and six dessert plates.

Materials and craft

Made from natural ceramics using quartz stone powder, powdered glass, borax, gum and Multani mitti (fuller’s earth), then hand painted with Kashi work, an art form unique to Multan. No chemicals are used in the colours, and the surfaces are hand polished. This set was made by Junaid Khalid, an artisan from South Punjab. Hand wash recommended. Our guide to the history of blue pottery in Multan tells the story of the craft.
